                               Jackson Miller Elementary School

On June 11, 2007, Jackson Miller Elementary School was one of six schools in Pennsylvania that received the Speaker’s Golden Apple Award for Parental Involvement.  The Speaker’s Golden Apple Awards for Education are the first of their kind established by a state Speaker of the House as a means to recognize a program in one of the following six categories:  Administrative Leadership: Applied Studies: Arts and Humanities: Behavioral and Social Sciences: Natural Sciences and Mathematics; and, Parental Involvement.

The teachers at Jackson Miller, with support from colleagues across the district, created a DVD entitled No Parent Left Behind:  A Literacy Video. The DVD provides parents with approaches to helping their child at home with the important comprehension strategies.  This DVD is now provided to all families as they enter the Huntingdon Area School District.

A 14” trophy of three golden books with a golden apple on top, as well as a 36” by 46” banner are on display at Jackson Miller to commemorate the achievement of our teachers.

Jackson Miller Elementary School has received the Keystone Achievement Award in recognition of meeting Adequately Yearly Progress (AYP).   The Keystone Achievement Award is given to schools as a public recognition of the fine work and commitment of educators, students and families.  Four Keystone Achievement Awards are proudly on display in the office of the school signifying this great accomplishment.

Jackson Miller Elementary School is located on Rt. 26 fifteen miles north of the borough of Huntingdon, in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.  It is one of four elementary schools in the Huntingdon Area School District.  Jackson Miller is a K-5 school, which presently serves 60 students.  The school provides all day kindergarten in addition one first grade class, a combined second-third grade class, and a combined fourth-fifth grade class.

Students receive specialized instruction in art, music, band, library, physical education, drug awareness, and health.  Support programs and services include:  Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, Learning Support, Life Skills, and after school and summer extended learning opportunities.  In addition, small group, class and individual counseling sessions are provided by our Guidance Counselor.  We have an active parent-teacher organization that facilitates student and family events throughout the school year.  These events include field trips, monthly AIR-JM (Adventures in Reading) reading celebrations, family-fun nights, school-wide celebrations and many more activities that support our students, families and staff. Parental involvement is encouraged throughout the school year.

Through our yearly curriculum review process, data-analysis sessions, annual goal setting meetings and our ongoing staff development focusing on literacy, we continue to move in a direction that centers around the success of each child.

During the 2007-2008 school year, the Response to Intervention model was implemented to provide additional support to children.  The model includes a team approach to provide appropriate scientifically-based intervention combined with ongoing progress monitoring to ensure academic success.
